In winter, the area offers cross-country ski trails, sledding hills and small ski resorts. Families enjoy nature playgrounds, wildlife parks and swimming pools. Excursions worth taking include the treetop trail in the national park, the glass centre in Spiegelau, Finsterau’s open-air museum, Passau, and the Czech town of Krumau.

Visit the Penninger schnapps distillery in Waldkirchen - a guided tour there is as interesting as it is enjoyable. Afterwards, a meal at the Herzstück restaurant in the heart of the town is well worthwhile. And while you're in the region: The three-river city of Passau is only around 30 kilometres away - a stroll through the old town or a leisurely boat trip on the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers make the perfect excursion
