Every day is an adventure in the Zillertal Arena

Wake up in the white mountain world of the Zillertal Arena. After a hot shower you can start with your breakfast. A crispy "Semmel", as the kaiser rolls are called here, tastes much better here than at home. A freshly boiled egg and a cup of coffee or tea with it. Did you know that our owners and caretakers like to pamper you? They often offer a bakery service. This way you do not have to go to the local bakery in the early morning in the cold. The local baker will come to you! Would you like to know at which holiday homes, chalets and apartments this service is offered? Feel free to ask our team of experts advises our Zillertal specialist Pepijn.

After breakfast, dress warmly for a wonderful day in the snow. You leave your holiday home by foot, car or ski bus in the direction of the valley station. The elongated ski area of the Zillertal Arena awaits you there. It is located on a 20-kilometer-long ridge spread over four mountains. Only one part is located in the Zillertal. The largest part lies in the high side valley of Gerlos and Königsleiten. These are the highest located winter sports villages here.

The 143 kilometres of slopes and the 52 cable cars and lifts are visited every day enthusiastically by many skiers and snowboarders. The slopes are suitable for every level. Everyone has their own favourite spot on the mountain. The Zillertal Arena is versatile, child-friendly and snow guaranteed. The range of activities on offer is very diverse:

  1. Get filmed on one of the five SkiMovie routes. Beam like a true movie ski star in the white snow as you take the perfect downhill run!
  2. Make a spectacular bag jump as a freestyler in one of the snow parks.
  3. Take the most beautiful skyline photos at one of the many photo points. A self-made memory that you can show off at home. The free Wi-Fi hotspots will help you download videos and photos directly and share them with your family or friends.
  4. Enjoy the action and speed of the Arena Coaster. This Alpine roller coaster starts near the valley station in Zell. Once you get on, several steep curves, loopings and jumps await you. In both summer and winter this is a top attraction!
  5. Ready to go downhill after a day on the slats? Then take the 7 km long toboggan run in Gerlosstein.

In the Zillertal Arena you can ski at an altitude between 580 and 2,500 metres. With almost 100% snow-guarantee, it is almost always possible to enjoy the slopes. For you as a winter sports fanatic, this is the ideal skiing area!

“Do you like variety and discovering new ski areas? Then choose the Zillertal Superskipass. This ski pass takes you to all 4 ski areas in the Zillertal. It even gives you free access to the ski busses in the entire valley," says Pepijn, our Zillertal specialist.

Discover the villages of the Zillertal Arena

Zillertal Arena consists of the villages of Gerlos, Wald-Königsleiten, Zell am Ziller and Krimml-Hochkrimml. These are all perfect villages for you to stay in during your winter sports holiday.

Gerlos

Gerlos is one of the most popular ski villages in Austria. This is not without reason. Gerlos is one of the highest situated villages in the Zillertal. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,300 meters and is therefore a fantastic snow-assured ski village. In addition, Gerlos is known for its many bars and nightclubs such as Cin Cin, Little London, Luigi's Turbo Bar and the Country Club. Dutch artists and DJs regularly turn it into a party during the winter sports season! The many restaurants, nice shops, tennis hall, squash center, tobogganing and ice-skating rink ensure that you will not get bored here.

There are two valley stations in Gerlos. The Isskogelbahn outside the village and the Dorfbahn in the centre. Thanks to the arrival of the Dorfbahn, there is no more lengthy waiting. At this valley station there is also a sports shop, ski rental and modern ski depot. The large car park, next to the Dorfbahn, can accommodate more than 200 cars. You can park here for free. Perfect!

Both the Isskogelbahn and the Dorfbahn take you from Gerlos to a large and sloping plateau. Ideal for the beginner and slightly advanced skier. The experienced skier can make beautiful ski runs from village to village. These are tours from a medium to difficult level. For snowboarders there is a halfpipe and fun park. As a cross-country skier you can enjoy yourself on 12 kilometres of trails. For hikers there are beautiful trails up to 30 kilometres long.

Wald-Königsleiten

Königsleiten is a lively and snow-assured chalet village at an altitude of 1,600 meters. The village with its many wooden, cosy chalets and apartments has preserved the authentic atmosphere. It lies on the border of Tyrol and Salzburgerland. The relaxed atmosphere that the mountain village breathes attracts a diverse public. Families with children, young people and experienced skiers enjoy their winter sports holiday here together.

For the winter sportsman who is looking for more of a challenge, this is an ideal destination. Red and black slopes are plentiful here. The Königsleitenspitze is the mountain with the most interesting off-piste lines. Beginners or families with children can visit the practice meadow in the middle of the village. From Königsleiten you are also on the slopes of the Gerlosplatte and Hochkrimml with its vast white slopes in no time ...

Those looking for peace and quiet may feel more at home in the nearby Wald im Pinzgau. Wald is often mentioned in the same breath as Königsleiten as it forms one municipality. Wald im Pinzgau lies at an altitude of 900 meters on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park. In the centre is the Kristallbad. Here you can warm up in the sauna after a day in the snow. Is it getting too hot for you? Then take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water.

Zell am Ziller

To reach the family-friendly winter sports village of Zell am Ziller, you do not have to make a steep climb. It is only 600 metres above sea level and is easy to reach by car or public transport. Surrounding places such as Mayrhofen, Kaltenbach and Fügen are within easy reach. Do you wish to rest during the day but want to enjoy thehttps://www.villaforyou.com/en/holiday-home-austria/ cosiness in the evening? The bustling centre of Mayrhofen is just around the corner. In Zell am Ziller itself, you will find around a cosy square with cobblestones, a few cafes and shops.

Here you can ski from the slopes all the way down into the valley. Furthermore, you will find mainly red slopes. Winter hiking and paragliding are popular activities in Zell am Ziller. Due to the large difference in altitude between the top and the valley, a tandem flight is worthwhile.

The modern Arena Coaster is the pride of Zell am Ziller. Toboggan fans come from far and wide, both in winter and summer, to have a flashy experience here. From Gerlos you can ski over different slopes to Zell am Ziller. Guests from Gerlos like to come here and have a look. The toboggan run is a variation on a roller coaster but has the flair of tobogganing. During an exciting ride on this 1,500-metre-long track you will be treated to flickering gyroscopes, fast downhill runs and two toboggans. Experience the ultimate adrenalin kick here!

Krimml-Hochkrimml

Krimml is a small, cosy and snow-assured village. It is known for the largest waterfall in Austria: the Krimmler Wasserfälle. Krimml is situated at an altitude of 1.076 meters and 8 kilometres from the ski area. Buses run all day long in the direction of Zell am See. You do not have to wait long. The busses run along several pick-up points in the ski area. The choice where you get off and go skiing is huge!

Winter athletes take the car or bus to the ski lifts at Hochkrimml and the Gerlosplatte. The nearest slopes from Krimml are most suitable for beginners. The number of blue slopes is the highest here. Towards the other villages you will see more red slopes, a few black ones and some fun parks. In Krimml itself you will find one of the five fun parks in the Zillertal Arena. There is a boardercross and an Action Park, where you will be filmed during the descent.

In the centre you will find wonderful restaurants, but you can also experience après-ski. Everything here is on a smaller scale and in a relaxed atmosphere.

The hospitable but quiet Hochkrimml is located at an altitude of 1,700 meters and has wide slopes. This gives you a lot of space and is therefore also very popular with families with children. You can ski to your doorstep almost anywhere here. Nearby you will also find cross-country trails. A ski shop for renting equipment, a ski school, good bus connection, a fun park and a toboggan run make it a suitable ski village for every winter sportsman.

Zillertal Arena: the secret tip for families with children

The villages in Zillertal Arena each have their own character. There is certainly a village that suits you and your family. In Zillertal Arena you will find good facilities for children. There are many ski schools and several wonderful slopes for children. A lot is organized for the children. So, no child needs to be bored here. Children from the age of 2 are welcome at the childcare centre. Even that is possible here. There is also a children's restaurant where the tastiest meals for the youngest winter sports guests are on the menu.

Gerlos is not only a party destination. Families with children also feel more than welcome here. In the centre is a Kinderland where the children playfully learn to make the first 'pizza' tips with their skis. At Arena Centre (at an altitude of 1,900 metres) there is also a Kinderland right on the sloping blue slope. Ideal for the first exercises in the snow. From the age of 2, children can visit the ski schools in Gerlos. There are many Dutch-speaking ski instructors, so they have a good understanding of what is being explained.

You want to experience more than just the slopes? Here are our tips.

  • For a real adrenaline rush, visit the fastest toboggan run in the Zillertal. The Arena Coaster in Zell am Ziller.
  • Go snowtubing on the Gerlosstein. You will be in a special tyre with hard plastic at the bottom. With this you can make quite some speed. You take this tube with you in the designated elevator. Once you are at the top there is a beautifully prepared track waiting for you. The ride down can start...feel the adrealine in your body and the wind through your hair!
  • Tie your skates, smell the fresh air and glide over the ice in the Freizeitpark in Zell.

Zillertal Arena has something wonderful to offer for every age group. It is for good reason that winter sports enthusiasts with children return here every year.

The latest developments in the Zillertal Arena

In order to serve winter sportsmen and women as they wish every year, a great deal is being modernised in the Zillertal Arena. For the winter season 2019/2020 the following has been renewed.

  • Stuanmandlbahn in Gerlos: This used to be a 4-person chairlift. Now you will find 10-person gondolas here. With a speed of 6 meters per second you will be standing on the Isskogel (2.264 meters high) in no time. You do not have long waiting times anymore. It is an important connection for skiers who want to ski in the direction of the slopes above Zell am Ziller. There is a new viewing platform on top of the mountain station.
  • The mountain station of the Rosenalmbahn in Zell am Ziller has been completely renovated. Here is now a 10-person gondola. There are new escalators and lifts, so you do not have to walk stairs with your ski boots on anymore. Ideal for families with small children! There is a new ski depot where you can store your skis and other equipment. Toilets and a lunchroom are now available as well.
  • At the valley station of the Fußalm X-press in Gerlos a new restaurant and a garage for the pistenbully's has been built. That there is nothing cosier than après ski directly on the slopes... is something they know better than anyone else in the Zillertal Arena! There is a new umbrella bar. A huge improvement. Instead of two umbrellas as before, there is now one big building with one modern umbrella. During the day you can enjoy a tasteful lunch or meal here. Later in the afternoon the roof will literally and figuratively come off. The glass roof can swing away so you can enjoy the sun. The bar is located on a road so you can easily get there by car or public transport. Does that one beer taste like more? Feel free to take a second one. You do not have to ski down yourself anymore.

In Zillertal Arena they know that standing still means going backwards. Zillertal Arena strives for a comfortable and modern winter sports experience for you!
