Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental: one of Austria's largest interconnected ski areas

It is finally time! You pack everything and make sure your car is winterized. The alarm goes off early in the morning. After a quick breakfast you are ready for a wonderful week in the snow. After a few stops along the way you approach the Austrian border. You drive in the direction of Kufstein when suddenly the imposing Kaiser Mountains appear on the horizon. You have butterflies in your stomach! Enthusiastically you shout, "Austria we're coming"! Directly across the border you drive into the ski area of Wilder Kaiser- Brixental. This ski area is not only one of the largest contiguous ski areas in Austria but also reasonably close by! You drive straight to your holiday home, which you have booked with Villa for You. Upon entry, the wooden chalet is already wonderfully heated by the hospitable homeowner. You unpack your stuff and after a long journey you finally fall on the comfortable couch, which is in the cosy living room. You sniff the smell of wood and look out the window. You enjoy the wide view over the snowy peaks of the Wilder Kaiser -Brixental. You know for sure... this is going to be a winter holiday to remember!

With atmospheric villages such as Ellmau and Westendorf, the Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental ski area is very popular among winter sports enthusiasts. The ski area is also known as just "Skiwelt". It has almost 300 kilometres of slopes, has 90 excellent cable cars and lies 1,800 metres above sea level. In places that are situated lower you will find numerous snow cannons that keep the slopes white. This allows you to ski there until the beginning of April. Both as a cross-country skier, skier and snowboarder you will find this area to your liking. Here you can make endless ski trips on the most beautiful slopes and along the nicest villages. Via the Ki-West run you have a direct connection to the ski area of Kitzbühel-Kirchberg. This makes the skiing pleasure even greater! Snowboarders are well catered for in the fund village near Westendorf. There is a section for the beginner snowboarder and a section for the professional.

'In my opinion, this ski area is the best ski area for making a hut tour. The area has about 80 small and authentic mountain huts both on and off the slopes. They are often lovingly run by families and have large sun terraces with a beautiful panorama. Warm up during the trip with a typical 'pancake' soup made of broth, strips of thinly sliced pancakes, parsley and chives. Once warmed up you continue to the next hut. With the three "Best of Skiwelt" ski tours you will discover the whole area in a special and fun way,’  says Pepijn, epicurean and founder of Villa for You.

Furthermore, the area is known for its many easy and medium-hard slopes. The Alps are not rough or steep here, but you will find a hilly landscape. That is why there are mainly blue and red slopes here. Beginners and families with children will have a great time here. The advanced skier has less challenge here. Difficult descents can only be found on the Choralpe (Westendorf) and Hohe Salve (Hopfgarten).

More than just skiing

In Skiwelt you can do more than just skiing. Experience how exciting it is to go night skiing, tobogganing or admire the mountain world from above while paragliding. For a truly unique experience visit the igloo village. Warm up with a Jager tea during an ice party with good DJs in the ice bar. Make your own ice sculpture and admire the illuminated ice church.

Authentic mountain villages in Skiwelt

The cosy villages in Skiwelt all have an authentic and unique character. The most famous villages are Ellmau, Going, Scheffau, Söll, Hopfgarten, Brixen im Thale and Westendorf. All villages can be reached by a free ski bus.

Ellmau

Ellmau lies at an altitude of 820 metres, at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser and is a sporty and atmospheric winter sports village. The modern 10-seater Hartkaiserbahn takes you quickly to the centre of the skiing area. There are excellent skiing opportunities here. After a day of skiing it is great to enjoy the warm water, sauna and magnificent views of the snowy peaks from the Kaiserbad in the village. The charming little church and the surrounding cosy cafes in the centre are characteristic of the village. For an atmospheric après-ski you have come to the right place!

Going

This village has a quiet character and is especially loved by cross-country skiers. In the middle of the village runs the famous cross-country ski trail, the Koasalauf. The 4-seater lift takes you from the village to the Asterberg. At an altitude of 1,267 meters you will find rolling slopes here. Ideal for beginners and families with children. Let the wind blow through your hair on the 4.5 km long toboggan run, which starts at the top of the Asterberg.

Scheffau

Scheffau is surrounded by almost 300 kilometres of slopes. From the village you can reach the Brandstadl via two gondolas in less than 15 minutes. This mountain lies at an altitude of 1,650 metres and is the gateway to the Hohe Salve of Söll as well as the slopes at Ellmau and Going. From here you can enjoy fantastic skiing and cross-country skiing. But you will find more ways to get down from the mountain here. How about tobogganing? Or snow tubes? With a thick rubber band, you slide down at a considerable speed. Rather a little less sensation? Then take a beautiful walk through the winter wonderland. Around the Wilder Kaiser there are no less than 140 kilometres of hiking trails. As a walking enthusiast you can get on well with this.

Söll

For a successful après-ski you must be in the international Söll! Both English, German and Dutch winter sports enthusiasts are frequent guests here. Are you a lover of Tyrolean conviviality? After a day of skiing, dive into one of the many cosy cafes and bars. In the cosy village centre you will find several shops, traditional houses with murals and a car-free shopping street.

Söll lies at an altitude of 1,829 metres, in a sunny valley between the Kaiser Mountains and the Hohe Salve. This ski village is a fantastic winter sports destination for the whole family. From the season 2020/2021, the 72 new 10-person "Hexenwasser gondolas" will take you within a few minutes to the white slopes at an altitude of 1,157 meters. Once on top of the slopes of Zinsberg and Eiberg, you will find a true paradise for the average to excellent skier. Beginners can visit Knolln, a practice meadow, in the village itself. Here is an easy slope with drag lift.

Hopfgarten

Hopfgarten lies at the foot of the Hohe Salve and is the largest winter sports village in Skiwelt. It has a charming and historic centre and a relaxed atmosphere. You will find snowboarders, cross-country skiers and novice skiers. On Rigi-alm, located between Hopfgarten and Söll, snowboarders in particular find a lot of entertainment. With around 70 kilometres of cross-country trails, Hopfgarten is also known as one of the better cross-country resorts in the area. If you take the slope descent 20 in the direction of Hopfgarten, you have a beautiful view on "the cathedral of Brixental". This local church has a rich history and is definitely worth a visit. Away from the slopes, you can have a good time here too; it is a great place to be. There is an ice-skating rink, fitness centre, floodlit toboggan run, various hiking trails and torch-lit hikes.

Brixen im Thale

Brixen im Thale is the oldest village in the valley and namesake of the Brixental. It is a stone's throw from Kirchberg and Kitzbühel. What is special about this village is that you can reach the slopes in both the north and south of the village. In the north you take the lift to the Hochbrixen ski area and in the south lies the versatile ski area of Westendorf. Both ski areas are connected to the Kitzbühler Alps. Thanks to its convenient location, this village is a good starting point for a wonderful winter sports holiday.

Westendorf

Westendorf is an attractive and lively village and very popular among Dutch winter sports enthusiasts. Supermarkets and wellness facilities are within reach here. Around the lovely little church with onion-shaped tower you will find restaurants and bars in the centre with the authentic Austrian cosiness. At the Gerry's Inn, the Moskito and Wunderbar they know how to throw a good après-ski party every night!

From Westendorf you can reach two immense ski areas in no time. The Alpenrosenbahn takes you directly to the white slopes of Skiwelt. There is also an 8-seater gondola that connects to the ski area of Kitzbühel - Kirchberg. Unfortunately, the connection is not yet established. You still have to travel a bit by ski bus.

But this is not all...

The ski area Wilder Kaiser -Brixental has even more cosy smaller villages such as Itter, Bad Häring, Mariastein, Kirchbichl, Wörgl, Angath and Angerberg.

Something else besides skiing? Fancy an afternoon of shopping, wellness or swimming? A visit to Wörgl is recommended. Wörgl is a larger village but does not have its own ski area. Here you will find larger supermarkets and a bustling village centre with one of the longest shopping streets in Tyrol. The Wörgler Wasserwelt is a fantastic indoor swimming paradise with various wellness facilities for young and old. Enjoy the warmth in the themed saunas, infrared temples and variety of fantastic casts. Children love the wave pool, the Formula 1 slide and the indoor and outdoor lagoons. For the little ones there is an adventure island with a pirate ship and a mini club.

An attractive area for families with children

Skiwelt is a particularly child-friendly valley. Due to the rolling landscape, there is a wide range of wide blue slopes, where you can ski with your whole family. When it comes to ski passes and costs Skiwelt also tries to accommodate the families. There are special "parents' passes". This way, one of the parents can stay in the holiday home with the youngest one, while the other one goes skiing. Do you prefer to go skiing together? Then you can use one of the children's areas. These ski schools and kindergartens in one are located in the valley or at the mountain stations themselves and each have a conveyor belt and practice meadow. Here the children learn "the first tricks of the trade" in a relaxed atmosphere and in a professional manner. You will be amazed at how fast they learn and stand on the slats. The ski instructors here also speak Dutch and English. Even for children from 5 months you will find a babysitter on the mountain.

‘The area has a wide choice of ski rentals, ski schools and kindergartens with interesting offers. If you prepare well for your winter holiday, you can often save money. Take a look at their offer at home in advance so that once you're here, you don't have to figure this out and you know which offer is right for you' , says Pepijn rental expert and avid skier.

In Skiwelt the experience of the child is of the utmost importance. Just a ride with a 10-person gondola by Hans im Glück is a true fairy tale. Every second gondola is richly decorated from the outside. You float above the colourful Hans im Glück course. From the winter of 2020 - 2021 the children in the 'Hexenwasser gondola' in Söll will also be included in an exciting story. All 72 gondolas have their own fairy tale theme. On the Simonalm in Söll you can meet witches on the slopes from Sunday to Thursday. Don't you see them on the slopes? Then come to the 400-year-old farmhouse and discover how they brew a magical witch's potion here. Do your kids dare to taste this?

Your kids had a lot of fun last week at Kinderland. The ski instructor or teacher took care of your offspring with love and pleasure. The first techniques have been skilfully learned. And then that is it. Your little girl and tough guy are sliding down the "real" slope for the first time. They effortlessly show what they have learned. Proud as a peacock, you are glowing along the side and encourages them fanatically. Suddenly they are called. You are scared but soon you smile from ear to ear. They are literally crowned the "Kinder Kaiser & Kinder Kaiserin" of the ski village. As the youngest participants, they will be put in the spotlight. With a beautiful crown on their heads you walk with them to the ski hut to get a bite to eat. They did get hungry after their adventure. Treat them to a plate full of deliciously sweet "Kaiserschmarrn" with raisins and powdered sugar. After they have tastefully eaten, you can see their red cheeks glowing. It is time to go to bed. Together you go back to the fine chalet where you have had a wonderful winter sports holiday. One more night's sleep and tomorrow, after a wonderful week in the snow, it is time to return home.

Innovations in Skiwelt

Every year we invest in several innovations here. Everything to offer the winter sportsman modern and safe facilities. In the winter sports season 2019 / 2020 there are, among other things, new lifts realized;

  • The Zinsbergbahn, is the first combined lift to the Kitzbühler Alpen. This elevator has 10-person gondolas and 8-person chairs with heating and weather hood.
  • The Fleidingbahn, takes you to the highest peak of the skiing area, at an altitude of 1,892 meters. It can accommodate 8 people. During the summer of 2020 there will be a viewing platform at the mountain station.

For the start of the winter sports season 2020/2021 the following is planned;

  • The old 4-person gondola in Hopfgarten-Itter is replaced by a modern 10-person variant.
  • From July 2020, the new 10 person gondolas to Hexenwasser can be put into use. This is not just an elevator but an experience. In every cabin you will hear one of the unique adventure stories. Once at the top of the mountain station you will find new "witchcraft" with a witch's kitchen, witch's tube, workshop, sewing room, witch stage and witch's foot baths.

Investments are made not only in gondolas but also in events and activity programmes.

  • For hikers, 3 new hiking trails will be opened on the Hohe Salve near Hexenwasser and in Hochsöll. The winter hiking pass is also available for 3 or 4 days starting next season.
  • In the Alpen igloo village, you can spend the night from Thursday to Sunday in one of the 18 igloos at the mountain station in Hochbrixen.
